Renewing your passport on a fast track timeline
To renew a U.S. passport in under 2 weeks, you must make an appointment at a regional Passport Agency and provide proof of international travel within 14 days. If you have more than 14 days but less than 6 weeks, use the expedited mail service through the Department of State with overnight shipping both ways.
- Verify your eligibility. Check if your current passport is undamaged, was issued within the last 15 years, and was issued after you turned 16. If not, you must apply in person using form DS-11.
- Prepare your documentation. Complete form DS-82 online. Print and sign it. Include your old passport, a new passport photo (2x2 inches, no glasses, white background), and a check or money order for the total fee.
- Pay for expedited service. Include the $60 expedite fee in your payment. Use a traceable courier service like USPS Priority Mail Express, FedEx, or UPS for both shipping your application and the return delivery.
- Book a life-or-death or urgent travel appointment. If you have travel in less than 14 days, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. Have your flight itinerary ready to prove your travel date.
- Can I walk into a passport agency without an appointment?
- No. Regional agencies strictly require appointments, and you must prove you have international travel within 14 days.
- Does my passport photo need to be professional?
- It needs to meet specific Department of State requirements. You can take it at home, but using a service like CVS or Walgreens is safer to ensure it meets the size and lighting standards.
