Renewing your passport for business travel on a tight deadline
If you have a business trip in less than 14 days, you must use an official Passport Agency office for an in-person, expedited appointment. You cannot rely on mail-in services for emergency or short-notice travel.
- Check your passport validity. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining. Most countries will deny entry if you are closer to your expiration date than that.
- Book an in-person appointment. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment at your nearest regional agency. You must provide proof of international travel (e.g., flight itinerary) to get a slot.
- Prepare your documents. Bring a completed DS-82 form, your most recent passport, one color passport photo taken within the last 6 months, and your proof of travel. You must also have your payment ready (credit cards, checks, or money orders).
- Attend your appointment. Arrive 15 minutes early. Be prepared to wait, as processing can take several hours on the day of your appointment. Your passport will either be issued that day or shipped to you via overnight delivery.
- Can I use a private passport expediting service?
- Yes, but they are essentially just couriers who wait in line for you. You can often save money by doing it yourself, but they are useful if you cannot travel to a regional office.
- What if there are no appointments available?
- Keep checking the website frequently, as slots open up due to cancellations. Alternatively, contact your local Congressional representative’s office, as they often have constituent services staff who can assist with urgent passport issues.
