Renewing your passport for urgent international travel

If you have international travel within 14 days, you must make an appointment at a regional passport agency. You cannot renew via mail or online if you are within this two-week window.

Confirm your travel date. Check your flight itinerary. You cannot book an appointment until you are within 14 calendar days of your international departure date. If you have proof of a life-or-death emergency, this window extends to 3 days.
Prepare your documentation. Gather a completed Form DS-11, a new passport photo (2x2 inches), your old passport, and proof of international travel (e.g., a flight confirmation printout). Ensure you have a check or money order for the $190 application fee.
Call the National Passport Information Center. Call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule your appointment at the nearest regional agency. Do not show up without an appointment; you will be turned away.
Attend your appointment. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to the regional agency. Bring your printed appointment confirmation and all documents listed in step 2. You will usually receive your passport either on the same day or within 24-48 hours.
