How to Enter Thailand Without a Visa
Citizens of 64 countries can enter Thailand visa-free for 30 days (by air) or 15 days (by land). You need a passport valid for 6+ months, proof of onward travel within 30 days, and sufficient funds (20,000 THB cash equivalent). Check if your country qualifies before traveling.
- Check if your passport qualifies. Verify your country is on Thailand's visa exemption list. Major countries include US, UK, Canada, Australia, most EU nations, Japan, and South Korea. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from entry date.
- Prepare proof of onward travel. Book a flight, bus, or train ticket leaving Thailand within 30 days (or 15 days for land entry). Immigration may ask to see this. A refundable ticket works if you're unsure of departure plans.
- Show sufficient funds. Carry 20,000 THB cash (about $560) per person or equivalent in major currency. Credit cards don't count. This is rarely checked but required by law.
- Fill out arrival card. Complete the TM.6 arrival/departure card on the plane or at immigration. Keep the departure portion - you'll need it when leaving Thailand.
- Present documents at immigration. Show your passport, completed arrival card, and onward ticket if requested. Answer any questions about your stay honestly. You'll receive a 30-day stamp for air arrivals or 15-day stamp for land crossings.
- Can I extend my visa-exempt stay?
- No. Visa-exempt entries cannot be extended. You must leave Thailand before your stamp expires and re-enter, or apply for a proper visa if you need longer.
- How many times can I enter visa-free?
- No official limit for air arrivals, but repeated entries may raise questions. Land entries are limited to 2 per calendar year via the same border crossing.
- What if I don't have onward travel booked?
- Buy a refundable ticket or book a cheap bus to Cambodia/Laos that you can change later. Airlines may deny boarding without onward travel proof.
- Do I really need to carry cash?
- By law, yes - 20,000 THB equivalent per person. It's rarely checked but carrying it prevents problems if you're randomly selected for verification.
