Choosing Between Serengeti Lodges and Tented Camps

Choose a lodge if you prioritize amenities like solid walls, air conditioning, and swimming pools. Choose a tented camp if you want an immersive wildlife experience where you can hear the sounds of the bush from your bed.

  1. Determine your comfort threshold. Lodges are permanent structures with concrete walls and en-suite bathrooms, functioning like standard hotels. Tented camps use canvas walls—often on raised platforms—providing a 'glamping' experience that feels closer to the outdoors.
  2. Assess your desire for privacy. Lodges are usually larger, catering to 50+ guests, which can feel crowded in dining areas. Tented camps are typically boutique, hosting 8-20 guests, offering a more intimate and personalized service level.
  3. Evaluate the need for night-time security. If you are anxious about animals near your room, choose a lodge. At tented camps, you are frequently escorted by a Masai guard to and from your tent after dark, as wildlife regularly walks through the unfenced camp grounds.
  4. Factor in the season. During the hot, dry months (July-October), lodges offer better climate control. During the migration season, mobile tented camps are moved to follow the herds, meaning they are almost always closer to the best wildlife viewing.
Will I be hot in a tented camp?
Most high-end tented camps are designed with mesh windows and canvas flaps that provide excellent ventilation. During the day, it will be warm, but nights in the Serengeti often drop to 15°C (59°F).
Are there bugs in the tents?
Tents are fully sealed with heavy-duty zippers and insect netting. While you are in the bush, bugs are part of the experience, but your sleeping area remains a protected zone.
Do lodges have Wi-Fi?
Most lodges offer Wi-Fi in the main lobby or library. Tented camps are often off-grid, so expect limited to no connectivity, which is part of the 'unplugged' appeal.
