How to get a Kenya work permit
Kenya work permits are processed through the eCitizen portal and take 30-90 days. You need a job offer first, then your employer initiates the application. The permit costs $2,000 and requires medical exams, police clearances, and academic certificates.
- Secure a job offer from a Kenyan employer. Your employer must demonstrate they couldn't fill the position locally. They'll need to advertise the role in Kenyan media for 21 days before hiring you.
- Register on eCitizen portal. Create an account at ecitizen.go.ke. This is Kenya's official government services platform where all work permit applications are submitted.
- Gather required documents. You need: valid passport, academic certificates, professional certificates, CV, passport photos, medical certificate from approved doctor, police clearance from your home country, and marriage certificate if applicable. All foreign documents must be apostilled.
- Complete medical examination. Get examined by a doctor approved by Kenya's Ministry of Health. The medical report must be less than 3 months old when you submit your application.
- Submit application online. Your employer submits the application through eCitizen, uploads all documents, and pays the $2,000 fee. You'll receive a confirmation email with tracking number.
- Wait for processing. Standard processing takes 30-90 days. You can track progress on eCitizen using your reference number. Immigration may request additional documents.
- Collect your permit. Once approved, collect your work permit from Nyayo House in Nairobi or the immigration office where you applied. Bring your passport and approval notification.
- Can I work while my permit application is being processed?
- No. You must wait until your work permit is approved before starting employment. Working without a permit is illegal and can result in deportation.
- How long is a Kenya work permit valid?
- Initial permits are typically valid for 1-2 years. Renewals can be for up to 2 years. You must renew before expiry - there's no grace period.
- Can my family join me on a work permit?
- Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 18 can apply for dependent passes once your work permit is approved. They cannot work on dependent status.
- What happens if I change jobs?
- Class M permits are tied to specific employers. You need a new work permit application for a different employer, even in the same field.
- Do I need to be in Kenya to apply?
- You can apply from inside Kenya on a tourist visa or from your home country. Processing times are similar either way.
