How to Apply for First-Time Passports as a Couple

Both of you must apply in person at an acceptance facility with separate applications, required documents, and fees. You can apply together at the same appointment but will receive individual passports. Processing takes 6-8 weeks for routine service or 2-3 weeks for expedited.

  1. Gather required documents for both applicants. Each person needs: completed Form DS-11, proof of U.S. citizenship (certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate), valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID), and one passport photo. Make copies of everything except the photos.
  2. Get passport photos taken. Visit CVS, Walgreens, or a post office for official passport photos. Each person needs one photo. Cost is typically $15-20 per person. Photos must be taken within 6 months of application.
  3. Find an acceptance facility that takes appointments. Use the State Department's facility search tool to find post offices, libraries, or clerk of court offices near you. Many require appointments - book 2-4 weeks ahead during busy seasons (spring/summer).
  4. Apply together at your appointment. Both applicants must appear in person with all documents and fees. You'll sign the applications in front of the acceptance agent. The agent will review documents, witness signatures, and seal your application packets.
  5. Pay fees and choose processing speed. Application fee is $130 per person plus $35 execution fee per person (total $165 each). Add $60 per person for expedited service. Pay with check, money order, or exact cash - no credit cards at most locations.
  6. Track your applications. You'll receive separate tracking numbers. Check status online at travel.state.gov using your last name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of Social Security number. Passports arrive separately even if applied together.
Can we use the same appointment slot?
Yes, most acceptance facilities will process both applications during one appointment time, but call ahead to confirm they can handle two first-time applications together.
What if one of us has a different last name?
No problem - you apply as individuals with your own legal names. If recently married and one person's ID doesn't match their birth certificate due to name change, bring a certified marriage certificate.
Do we get our passports at the same time?
Not necessarily. Even when applied for together, passports are processed individually and may arrive on different days within the same week.
Can we expedite just one passport?
Yes, you can choose different processing speeds. One person can pay for expedited service while the other uses routine processing.
What if we're traveling together soon?
If traveling within 14 days, you need an emergency appointment at a passport agency, not a regular acceptance facility. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.
