How Many Passport Pages You Need for Long-Term Backpacking

For a 6-12 month backpacking trip, you need at least 16-20 blank passport pages. Most countries require 2-4 blank pages for entry stamps and visas, and popular backpacking routes through Southeast Asia, South America, or overland Europe can use 20+ pages quickly.

  1. Calculate your country count. List every country you plan to visit. Include transit stops where you'll clear immigration. A typical Southeast Asia circuit hits 8-12 countries. Overland Europe can be 15+ countries. South America backpacking averages 6-8 countries.
  2. Factor 2-4 pages per country. Most countries stamp entry and exit (2 pages minimum). Countries requiring visas need 1-2 additional pages for the visa itself. High-traffic borders like Thailand-Cambodia often use full pages for stamps.
  3. Add visa pages to your count. China visa takes 1 full page. India visa takes 1 full page. Brazil, Russia, and Argentina visas each need 1 page. Tourist visas for Myanmar, Iran, and Uzbekistan require full pages.
  4. Check your current passport. Standard US passports have 28 pages (26 visa pages). Large passports have 52 pages (50 visa pages). Count only completely blank pages - pages with any stamps are unusable for visas.
  5. Apply for renewal if needed. If you have fewer than 16 blank pages for a long trip, renew your passport. US passport renewal takes 6-8 weeks by mail, 2-3 weeks expedited. Many countries won't let you enter with less than 6 months validity remaining.
Can I add pages to my existing passport?
No. The US stopped offering passport page additions in 2016. You must renew for a new passport with more pages.
What counts as a blank page for visas?
Only completely unmarked visa pages work for most visa applications. Pages with any stamps, even small ones, are usually rejected by visa offices.
Do I need the large passport book?
For 6+ month trips hitting multiple regions, yes. The 52-page book gives you 50 visa pages versus 26 in the standard book. It costs the same.
What if I run out of pages while traveling?
You'll need to visit a US embassy or consulate for emergency passport services. This takes 1-2 weeks and costs extra. Much better to plan ahead.
