How to Get Extra Passport Pages for Multiple Visas

You cannot add pages to a US passport anymore. Since 2016, you must apply for a passport renewal to get a new 52-page book when you run out of space. For other countries, check with your passport office as some still allow page additions.

  1. Check your current passport pages. Count the blank visa pages in your passport. You need at least 2-3 completely blank pages for most countries. Pages with stamps or partial markings don't count as usable.
  2. Determine if you need action now. Apply for renewal if you have fewer than 4 blank pages and upcoming travel plans. Processing takes 6-11 weeks for routine service, 2-3 weeks for expedited.
  3. Choose your passport book size (US only). Request the 52-page book instead of the standard 28-page book when renewing. No extra fee. Check the large book box on Form DS-82 or mention it when applying.
  4. Gather renewal documents. You need your current passport, Form DS-82, one passport photo, and $130 fee ($190 if expedited). Mail to the address on the form or apply in person if you need it expedited.
  5. Apply early for frequent travelers. Renew when you have 6 months left on your current passport if you travel often. Many countries require 6 months validity anyway, so you'll need a new passport regardless.
Can I travel while my passport is being renewed?
No. Your current passport gets cancelled when you apply for renewal. You cannot travel internationally during the processing period unless you apply in person for emergency travel.
What if I need to travel urgently and my passport is full?
Make an appointment at a passport agency for same-day or next-day service. You need proof of urgent travel (airline tickets for travel within 14 days). Costs $190 plus $60 expedite fee.
Do other countries still add pages to passports?
Some do. Canada, UK, and several European countries offer page additions for a fee. Contact your country's passport office directly for current policies and procedures.
How many blank pages do I really need?
Keep at least 4-6 blank pages available. Some countries require 2-3 consecutive blank pages for visas and entry stamps. Popular destinations like India and China need multiple pages.
