How to Renew Your Passport Quickly
Expedite your passport renewal by using the State Department's expedited service ($60 extra + overnight shipping both ways) which takes 2-3 weeks instead of 6-8 weeks. For same-day service, visit a regional passport agency with proof of urgent travel.
- Check if you qualify for renewal by mail. Your current passport must be undamaged, issued when you were 16+, issued within the last 15 years, and in your current name. If any of these don't apply, you need to apply in person instead.
- Gather required documents. You need form DS-82, your current passport, one new passport photo (2x2 inches), and payment. Get photos at CVS, Walgreens, or Costco for $15-20.
- Choose your speed. Standard service: 6-8 weeks, $130. Expedited service: 2-3 weeks, $190 ($130 + $60 expedite fee). For travel within 14 days, book an appointment at a regional passport agency.
- Submit your application. Mail to the address on form DS-82. Use expedited shipping both ways if you chose expedited service (add $37.90 for overnight shipping). Include a prepaid overnight envelope for return.
- Track your application. Check status at travel.state.gov using your last name, date of birth, and SSN. You'll get email updates if you provided an email address.
- Can I travel while my passport renewal is processing?
- No. You must surrender your current passport when applying for renewal, so you cannot travel internationally until you receive the new one.
- What if I need my passport in less than 2 weeks?
- Book an appointment at one of 26 regional passport agencies. You'll need proof of urgent travel (flight confirmation) and can get same-day service. Call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule.
- Can I renew an expired passport by mail?
- Yes, as long as it expired less than 5 years ago and you meet the other renewal requirements. If it's been expired longer than 5 years, you must apply in person.
- Do I get my old passport back?
- Yes, it's returned with your new passport but with holes punched through it to show it's canceled. Keep it as backup ID and for visa history.
