What to Do When Your Passport Is Running Out of Pages
When your passport has fewer than 4 blank pages left, apply for a passport renewal immediately. Most countries require 2-3 blank pages for entry, and processing takes 6-11 weeks for routine service. You cannot add pages to a US passport anymore.
- Count your remaining blank pages. Look through your passport and count pages that are completely blank on both sides. Do not count pages with any stamps, visas, or markings. If you have 4 or fewer blank pages, start the renewal process immediately.
- Check your upcoming travel dates. List all trips planned in the next 6 months. Standard passport processing takes 6-8 weeks, expedited service takes 2-3 weeks. If you have travel within 2 weeks, you'll need an emergency appointment at a passport agency.
- Gather renewal documents. You need: your current passport, one passport photo, Form DS-82 (if renewing by mail), and $130 for the renewal fee plus $60 for expedited service if needed. Take your photo at CVS, Walgreens, or a post office for $15-20.
- Choose your application method. Mail renewal (Form DS-82): If your passport is less than 15 years old, undamaged, and you were over 16 when it was issued. In-person renewal: If your passport is damaged, over 15 years old, or you were under 16 when it was issued. Emergency appointment: Only for travel within 2 weeks.
- Submit your application. For mail renewal, send everything to the National Passport Processing Center address on Form DS-82. For in-person, book an appointment at an acceptance facility (post office, courthouse, or library). For emergency service, call 1-877-487-2778 to book a passport agency appointment.
- Track your application. Check status at travel.state.gov using your last name, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your Social Security number. Your old passport will be returned with the new one, but it will be cancelled with holes punched through it.
- Can I travel while my passport renewal is being processed?
- No. The State Department keeps your current passport during processing, so you cannot travel internationally until you receive your new passport.
- Can I add more pages to my current passport instead of renewing?
- No. The US stopped offering passport page additions in 2016. You must renew your entire passport when you run out of pages.
- How many blank pages do I actually need for travel?
- Most countries require 2-3 blank pages for entry. Some like South Africa require 2 completely blank facing pages. Always travel with at least 4-6 blank pages to be safe.
- What counts as a blank page?
- Only pages that are completely empty on both sides count as blank. Pages with any stamps, visas, endorsements, or markings do not count as available space.
- Can I get an emergency passport if I need to travel immediately?
- Yes, but only for life-or-death emergencies or urgent business travel within 72 hours. You must prove the emergency and appear in person at a passport agency with an appointment.
