How to renew passports as a couple before international travel

Apply for passport renewals at least 6-8 months before travel if using routine processing, or pay for expedited service 2-3 months out. You can submit applications together but each person needs their own forms, fees, and photos. Book your trip only after passports are in hand.

  1. Check both passports and plan timing. Check expiration dates for both passports. Many countries require 6 months validity remaining. Apply 6-8 months early for routine processing ($130 + $35 execution fee) or 2-3 months for expedited ($230 + $35 execution fee). Never book flights until renewals are complete.
  2. Gather documents for both applicants. Each person needs: current passport, one passport photo (2x2 inches), completed DS-82 form if renewing by mail or DS-11 if applying in person, and payment. You cannot share photos or combine applications.
  3. Decide on processing method. Renew by mail if both current passports are undamaged, issued when you were 16+, issued within last 15 years, and you can provide them. Otherwise visit an acceptance facility together. Mail is easier for couples but both passports will be held during processing.
  4. Submit applications. If mailing: send both applications in separate envelopes on the same day with tracking. If applying in person: book appointments at the same facility on the same day. Bring cash or money orders for fees - most facilities don't take cards.
  5. Track progress and plan around processing. Check status online using last names and dates of birth. Routine processing takes 6-8 weeks, expedited takes 2-3 weeks. Don't make travel reservations until you have both new passports physically in hand.
Can we submit both passport renewals in one envelope?
No. Each person needs a separate application envelope with their own forms, photos, fees, and current passport. You can mail them on the same day but they must be separate packages.
What if one passport expires before the other?
Renew both at the same time anyway. It's easier to coordinate travel when both passports expire around the same time, and you'll avoid this timing issue for the next 10 years.
Should we pay for expedited processing?
Only if you're within 3 months of travel. Expedited processing costs $100 extra per person but only saves 4-5 weeks. Plan ahead and save the money.
Can we travel if one passport comes back but the other doesn't?
No. Wait until you have both passports in hand before booking anything. Processing times can vary even when submitted together, and you can't leave anyone behind.
