How to prepare your passport for Africa travel
Get a passport with at least 6 months validity and 2-4 blank visa pages per country you'll visit. Most African countries require visas, which take 2-8 weeks to process, so start 3 months before your trip.
- Check your passport expiration date. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from Africa. Most countries won't let you in with less. If yours expires sooner, renew it now — standard processing takes 6-8 weeks.
- Count your blank visa pages. You need 2-4 completely blank pages per country for visas and entry stamps. Not the endorsement pages in the back — actual visa pages. If you're short, get extra pages added (if your country offers this) or renew your passport.
- Research visa requirements for each country. Look up requirements on each country's embassy website or use the IATA travel requirements tool. Requirements vary wildly — some countries offer visa-on-arrival, others require advance applications with specific documents.
- Gather required documents. Most African visa applications need: passport photos (specific sizes vary), proof of yellow fever vaccination, return flight tickets, hotel reservations, bank statements, and invitation letters. Get extra passport photos — you'll need 2-4 per visa.
- Apply for visas in the right order. Start with the hardest-to-get visas first. Some embassies want to see other visas already in your passport. Submit applications 6-8 weeks before travel — some take longer during busy seasons.
- Make copies of everything. Scan your passport photo page, all visas, and vaccination certificates. Email copies to yourself and carry physical copies separately from your passport. This saves days if you lose your passport abroad.
- Can I get African visas on arrival?
- Some countries offer this, but it's risky. Lines can be hours long, fees may only accept specific currencies, and you might be denied entry if you're missing any documents. Getting visas in advance is almost always better.
- How many blank passport pages do I really need?
- Plan for 2-4 pages per country minimum. Some countries use full pages for visas, others stamp across existing stamps. Egypt alone can use 2 pages. Running out of pages abroad is a nightmare that requires emergency passport services.
- Do I need yellow fever vaccination for all African countries?
- Not all, but many require proof if you're coming from or transiting through yellow fever zones. Get vaccinated anyway — the certificate is valid for life and required for many countries. Some border officials ask for it even when it's not officially required.
- What if my passport expires while I'm traveling?
- You can't travel on an expired passport. If it expires during your trip, you'll need embassy assistance to get emergency documents, which takes time and costs extra. Always have 6+ months validity before departure.
