How to Pack for Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Pack in layers for extreme temperature variation, bring a -20°F sleeping bag, and focus on moisture-wicking base layers and waterproof outer shells. Most climbers carry 15-20 pounds in their day pack while porters handle the rest.

  1. Choose your duffel bag. Bring a 90-120 liter soft duffel bag for porters to carry. Hard suitcases don't work. Keep it under 33 pounds (15kg) as porter weight limits are strictly enforced. Pack everything except daily essentials in this bag.
  2. Pack your layering system. Base layer: 2-3 moisture-wicking shirts (merino wool or synthetic). Mid layer: fleece or down jacket. Outer layer: waterproof jacket and pants. Avoid cotton completely - it kills when wet and cold.
  3. Get the right sleeping gear. Bring a sleeping bag rated to -20°F (-29°C) minimum. Summit night temperatures drop to -10°F. Most rental bags in Tanzania are only rated to 32°F and inadequate. Also pack a sleeping pad with R-value of 4+ for insulation from ground.
  4. Pack proper footwear. Waterproof hiking boots broken in for 50+ miles before the trip. Bring gaiters to keep snow out. Pack 4-5 pairs of moisture-wicking socks (no cotton) and liner socks to prevent blisters.
  5. Organize your day pack. 30-40 liter capacity. Pack: water bottles or hydration system (3+ liters capacity), snacks, rain gear, warm layers, headlamp, camera, and summit day extras like hand warmers and sunglasses.
  6. Add high-altitude essentials. Headlamp plus backup, sunglasses and glacier glasses for summit, SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, altitude sickness medication (consult doctor), and personal first aid supplies.
Can I rent gear in Tanzania?
Some gear yes, but quality varies wildly. Sleeping bags are often inadequate for summit conditions. Boots and technical clothing are better bought at home where you can ensure fit and quality.
How much should my day pack weigh?
Keep your day pack under 20 pounds. You'll carry water (6+ pounds), layers, snacks, and essentials. Porters carry everything else in your main duffel bag.
What's the most important single piece of gear?
A properly rated sleeping bag. More climbers fail due to inadequate sleep from being cold than any other gear issue. Don't compromise on this.
Do I need special boots?
Waterproof hiking boots, broken in, are essential. Trail runners won't work - you'll be walking through mud, snow, and volcanic rock. Ankle support and waterproofing are non-negotiable.
