What gear do you need for backpacking Southeast Asia

Pack light and focus on versatility. You need a 40-50L backpack, quick-dry clothes for hot humid weather, rain gear, and electronics that handle moisture. Most everything else you can buy cheaper in-country than hauling from home.

  1. Choose your backpack size. Get a 40-50L backpack. Anything bigger tempts you to overpack and becomes miserable in 95°F heat with 80% humidity. Test the hip belt with weight — your hips should carry the load, not your shoulders.
  2. Pack for heat and humidity. Bring 4-5 quick-dry shirts, 2 pairs quick-dry shorts, 1 pair long pants for temples and AC buses, and 1 light rain jacket. Avoid cotton — it stays wet and breeds bacteria in the humidity.
  3. Protect your electronics. Pack everything electronic in ziplock bags or dry bags. Humidity kills phones and cameras faster than you think. Bring a power bank that can handle getting damp.
  4. Get the right footwear. One pair of walking shoes that dry fast (trail runners work well) and flip-flops. That's it. Boots are overkill and sandals with straps collect mud and smell.
  5. Pack a medical kit. Bring anti-diarrheal medicine, oral rehydration salts, basic pain relievers, and any prescription meds. Pharmacies are everywhere but having basics prevents miserable nights.
  6. Bring cash handling gear. Money belt or hidden pocket for backup cards and emergency cash. ATMs charge fees but are everywhere. Notify your bank before you travel.
Should I bring a sleeping bag?
No. Hostels provide bedding and it's hot year-round. A silk sleep sheet weighs 4 oz and handles any cleanliness concerns.
What about a water filter?
Skip it. Bottled water costs 30-50 cents and is everywhere. A filter adds weight and maintenance you don't need.
Do I need malaria pills?
Depends on your route and risk tolerance. Bangkok and major cities are low risk. Rural areas and border regions have higher risk. Consult a travel medicine doctor 4-6 weeks before departure.
Can I do laundry on the road?
Yes, laundry service costs $1-3 per load and is available everywhere. Pack 5-7 days worth of clothes and wash weekly.
