Essential Gear for Traveling India with Kids

To survive India with a family, pack a high-quality water purification system, a portable fan for power outages, and a robust medical kit. You need to focus on hygiene, climate control, and entertainment to keep children comfortable during long transit days.

  1. Purify your own water. Never rely on bottled water alone. Bring a Grayl or LifeStraw bottle. It filters out bacteria and viruses instantly, saving you from buying hundreds of plastic bottles and worrying about seal tampering.
  2. Manage heat and airflow. Power cuts are common. Bring a clip-on, battery-operated stroller/handheld fan for each child. Pack lightweight, breathable linen or cotton clothing to keep skin covered from mosquitoes but cool enough for the 35°C+ heat.
  3. Build a 'Safety First' medical kit. Include oral rehydration salts (ORS), a digital thermometer, heavy-duty hand sanitizer, and charcoal tablets for upset stomachs. Have a copy of your child's vaccination record digitally stored and on paper.
  4. Pack for the train/car. Bring a tablet with pre-downloaded movies, a portable power bank, and a silk sleep sack liner. Train berths can be dusty; the liner keeps your kids separated from the provided bedding.
Should I bring a stroller?
Only if it is a compact, 'umbrella-style' travel stroller. Indian sidewalks are often uneven or non-existent, so you will likely end up carrying it more than pushing it.
Do I need special power adapters?
India uses Type C, D, and M plugs. A universal travel adapter that supports these three types will cover you everywhere.
