What to Pack for Long-Distance Train Travel in India
Pack light layers for temperature changes, your own bedding for sleeper trains, plenty of water and snacks, and keep valuables secure. Bring entertainment for long journeys and be prepared for basic bathroom facilities.
- Choose the right bag. Pack in a lockable hard-shell suitcase or duffel with chain and padlock. Avoid backpacks that can't be properly secured. You'll store luggage under your berth or on overhead racks.
- Pack temperature-appropriate clothing. Bring layers for AC compartments (can get cold) and general coaches (can get hot). Pack one warm layer even in summer—AC trains run cold overnight.
- Bring your own bedding for sleeper class. Pack a sheet, small pillow or pillowcase, and light blanket. Indian Railways provides minimal bedding in AC classes but nothing in sleeper class. A sleep sack works well.
- Stock up on food and water. Bring 2-3 liters of water per day of travel plus backup snacks like nuts, crackers, and fruit. Train food varies in quality and availability.
- Prepare for basic bathroom facilities. Pack toilet paper, hand sanitizer, soap, and wet wipes. Most train bathrooms lack these basics. Bring flip-flops for bathroom trips.
- Secure valuables properly. Use a money belt for documents and cash. Keep phone, passport, and tickets with you always. Chain your main luggage to the berth or seat frame overnight.
- Can I bring alcohol on Indian trains?
- No, alcohol is prohibited on Indian trains and at stations. You'll be fined if caught. Some premium trains serve beer in the dining car only.
- How much luggage can I bring?
- No official limit but space is tight. One large bag plus one carry-on per person is practical. Oversize luggage blocks aisles and annoys other passengers.
- Are there power outlets on trains?
- AC compartments have outlets near each berth. Sleeper and general class have few or no outlets. Bring a fully charged power bank as backup.
- What if I forget bedding for sleeper class?
- You can sometimes rent bedding from vendors at major stations for 30-50 rupees, but availability isn't guaranteed. Better to bring your own.
