How to Pack Carry-On Bags for International Family Travel
Prioritize a '24-hour survival kit' for each family member in their individual carry-on, including a change of clothes, essential toiletries, and critical electronics. Use compression cubes to maximize space and keep items organized so you aren't digging through bags at airport security.
- Assign one carry-on per person. Every child old enough to walk should have their own small backpack. This keeps the weight distributed and gives each person a sense of responsibility for their own gear.
- Use packing cubes by category. Pack one cube for outfits (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) and one for 'miscellaneous' (electronics, snacks, toys). Color-code these cubes so you can identify whose is whose instantly.
- Assemble the liquid security bag. Use one quart-sized clear bag for the entire family's liquids. Keep it at the very top of your main carry-on so you can pull it out in two seconds at security checkpoints.
- Pack a 'disaster' change of clothes. Always pack one full outfit for every family member in a carry-on, even if your luggage is checked. If the airline loses your bag, you have 24 hours of comfort before you need to shop.
- Should I bring full-sized snacks?
- Yes. Airport food is expensive and often unhealthy. Pack individual snack bags for kids to prevent 'hangry' meltdowns during long waits.
- Do I really need a change of clothes for everyone?
- Yes. Spilled juice, motion sickness, or lost checked luggage are common. One spare outfit prevents a bad day from becoming a crisis.
