How to manage family tech for stress-free travel

Centralize all charging into one high-wattage GaN hub and download all entertainment offline to personal devices before you leave the house. Avoid individual chargers for every family member to save space and prevent lost cables.

  1. Consolidate power. Buy one 100W+ GaN charger with at least 3 USB-C ports. This allows you to charge a laptop, a tablet, and a phone simultaneously from a single wall outlet, which is crucial in hotels with limited accessible plugs.
  2. Use a dedicated tech pouch. Keep all cables, dongles, and power banks in one designated zippered pouch. Use cable ties or velcro straps to keep cords from tangling. If it isn't in the pouch, it doesn't come on the trip.
  3. Pre-download everything. Don't rely on hotel Wi-Fi. 24 hours before departure, use your home high-speed connection to download all Netflix shows, YouTube videos, and games onto kids' tablets. Put all devices in Airplane Mode once the downloads are confirmed.
  4. Label devices and chargers. Use a label maker or bright colored electrical tape to mark chargers with your initials. In a family of four, it is impossible to track whose white cable is whose without identification.
Should I bring a power strip?
No. Power strips are bulky and often banned on cruise ships or cause issues with international voltage converters. A GaN wall hub is smaller and safer.
How do I stop kids from fighting over devices?
Use a 'tech time' system where devices are only accessible during transit (planes/trains) or for 1 hour of quiet time in the hotel. Keep them in your possession outside of those times.
