What to Pack for Backpacking Europe

Pack light with versatile layers, one good pair of walking shoes, and essentials that work across multiple climates. Aim for 35-40L backpack capacity and focus on items you can mix, match, and wash easily.

  1. Choose the right backpack. Get a 35-40L backpack with good shoulder straps and hip belt. Anything bigger and you'll overpack. Test the fit at a store with weight in it before buying.
  2. Pack for layering. Bring 2-3 base layers, 1-2 mid layers (fleece or light sweater), and 1 waterproof outer layer. This works for London rain and Barcelona heat in the same trip.
  3. Limit yourself to two pairs of shoes. One pair of broken-in walking shoes and one pair of sandals or lighter shoes for evenings. Your walking shoes will do 90% of the work.
  4. Pack quick-dry everything. Synthetic fabrics or merino wool for underwear, socks, and base layers. You'll be washing in hostel sinks more than you think.
  5. Bring adapters and a good power bank. Universal adapter that works across Europe, 10,000mAh+ power bank, and charging cables. Outlets vary by country and aren't always available.
  6. Pack one nice outfit. Something that works for nicer restaurants or clubs. Dark jeans or pants and a collared shirt will get you into most places.
How much should my packed backpack weigh?
Aim for 15-20 pounds (7-9kg) maximum. If you can't comfortably wear it for 30 minutes, it's too heavy.
Should I pack for the worst weather I might encounter?
Pack for the most likely weather plus one emergency layer. Don't pack for a week of rain in July just because it might happen.
How many outfits should I bring?
Plan for 7-10 days worth of clothes maximum. You'll do laundry weekly whether you want to or not.
Do I need special hiking gear for Europe?
Only if you're planning specific hikes. Regular walking shoes handle cobblestones and city walking better than hiking boots.
