What to Pack for an East Africa Safari

Pack neutral-colored clothing, sturdy boots, sun protection, and binoculars. Bring layers for temperature changes and a good camera with extra batteries. Most lodges provide laundry service, so pack light with 7-10 days of clothes max.

  1. Choose the right colors. Stick to khaki, olive green, brown, and beige clothing. Avoid bright colors (especially red and orange) and white, which shows dirt easily. Black and navy blue attract tsetse flies in some areas.
  2. Pack layering pieces. Bring lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, fleece or light jacket, and shorts. Mornings and evenings can be 50°F cooler than midday temperatures.
  3. Get proper footwear. Pack closed-toe hiking boots or sturdy sneakers for walking safaris, sandals for camp, and socks that cover your ankles. Break in boots before you travel.
  4. Prepare sun and insect protection. Bring SPF 30+ sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and DEET-based insect repellent (20-30%). Pack a head net if you're sensitive to bugs.
  5. Pack camera equipment. Bring a camera with telephoto lens (minimum 200mm), extra memory cards, portable charger or power bank, and lens cleaning kit. Dust is everywhere.
  6. Add essential accessories. Pack binoculars (8x32 or 10x42), headlamp with red light setting, day pack for walking safaris, and a bandana or buff for dust protection.
Can I wear camouflage clothing?
No. Camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in most East African countries and can result in arrest. Stick to solid neutral colors.
Do I need special vaccinations for safari?
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to most East African countries. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Consult a travel medicine clinic 4-6 weeks before departure.
Should I bring a sleeping bag?
Not for lodge or tented camp safaris - bedding is provided. Only bring a sleeping bag for camping safaris or budget overland trips.
How much luggage can I bring?
Flying safaris have strict weight limits - usually 15kg (33lbs) in soft-sided bags. Road safaris allow standard luggage. Check with your tour operator for specific limits.
