Keeping Your Electronics Dry in the Caribbean
To prevent internal corrosion and short circuits from Caribbean humidity, seal devices in airtight bags with rechargeable silica gel packets. Avoid moving electronics quickly between air-conditioned rooms and the hot, humid outdoors to prevent condensation build-up.
- Use high-quality dry bags. Use a heavy-duty, submersible dry bag (like those rated IPX7) for transport. This creates a primary barrier against the salty, moist air that promotes rapid corrosion.
- Deploy silica gel packets. Purchase industrial-grade, rechargeable silica gel canisters or packets. Toss two 50g packs into your tech case. Avoid the tiny packets found in shoe boxes as they are too weak for high-moisture environments.
- Manage temperature shock. When leaving an air-conditioned room (usually 68°F/20°C) for the humid outdoors (often 85°F+/30°C+), condensation will form instantly on cold surfaces. Leave your electronics in your sealed case for 30 minutes after entering a new environment to allow them to reach room temperature gradually.
- Clean connections regularly. Salt air is corrosive. Every 3 days, wipe down charging ports and exposed metal with a tiny amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab to strip away salt film before it eats into the contacts.
- Will a regular laptop bag protect my gear?
- No. Standard laptop bags are made of nylon or polyester that breathes. In the Caribbean, 'breathing' means letting in heavy moisture. You need a dedicated airtight or waterproof layer.
- What happens if I see fog on my lens?
- Do not turn the camera on. Put it back in your dry bag with fresh desiccant and let it sit for at least 4 hours. Do not use a hairdryer, as heat can melt internal lubricants or warp components.
