How to Pack for Family Travel in Southeast Asia
Pack lightweight, quick-dry fabrics in layers with one warm item per person. Bring minimal shoes, sun protection for everyone, and a compact first aid kit. Focus on versatile pieces that work in high humidity and air conditioning.
- Choose your luggage strategy. One large suitcase plus one small backpack per adult. Kids get their own small backpack with entertainment and snacks. Avoid multiple small bags - they get lost and slow you down at airports.
- Pack the base wardrobe. 5-7 lightweight t-shirts per person, 2-3 pairs of quick-dry shorts/pants, 1 long-sleeve shirt each for sun protection and air conditioning, 1 light sweater or fleece per person for mountain destinations or over-enthusiastic AC.
- Handle the shoe situation. Each person wears one pair of comfortable walking shoes on the plane, packs one pair of sandals. Kids pack flip-flops. Skip fancy shoes entirely - nowhere in SEA requires them.
- Prepare for weather extremes. Pack one compact rain jacket per person or a family-size umbrella. Bring wide-brimmed hats for everyone. Pack reef-safe sunscreen (mineral-based) - chemical sunscreens are banned in many marine parks.
- Organize family health supplies. First aid kit with band-aids, children's pain reliever, anti-diarrheal medication, probiotics, and any prescription meds with extra supplies. Include mosquito repellent with DEET for adults, picaridin for kids under 12.
- Pack for connectivity and entertainment. Universal power adapter, portable charger, entertainment for kids (downloaded movies, books, games). Include a waterproof phone case for each phone - you'll use them near water constantly.
- How much should kids pack themselves?
- Kids over 8 can pack their own backpack with entertainment, snacks, and one change of clothes. Parents handle all shared items, toiletries, and important documents. Let them choose 2-3 special comfort items.
- Do we need to pack formal clothes for temples?
- No formal clothes needed. Long pants and shirts that cover shoulders work for all temple visits. Many temples rent appropriate coverings if needed. Focus on comfort and coverage, not formality.
- Should we pack Western snacks for the kids?
- Pack 3-4 familiar snacks for the first few days and emergencies. Don't overpack - kids adapt quickly and SEA has excellent fruit, crackers, and international brands in cities. Save luggage space for souvenirs instead.
- How do we handle laundry with a family?
- Laundry service costs $2-5 per load in most SEA destinations. Do laundry every 3-4 days rather than packing for the entire trip. Bring enough underwear for one week, everything else for 4-5 days.
