How to Pack for Solo Travel in South America

Pack for extreme climate variation with layerable clothing, prioritize security gear, and bring versatile pieces that work across multiple countries. Focus on quick-dry fabrics and pack light since you'll be carrying everything yourself.

  1. Choose the right backpack. Get a 45-65L backpack with lockable zippers and multiple compartments. Osprey Farpoint 55 or Gregory Baltoro are solid choices. Test the weight fully packed - you should be able to carry it for 20 minutes without strain.
  2. Pack for climate extremes. Bring layers for everything from Amazon humidity to Patagonian cold. Pack 2-3 lightweight base layers, 1 fleece or down jacket, 1 rain jacket, and 1 pair of warm pants. Choose merino wool or synthetic materials that dry quickly.
  3. Prioritize security items. Pack a money belt, cable locks for your bag, a portable door lock, and photocopies of all documents stored separately. Keep emergency cash ($200-300) hidden in multiple locations.
  4. Select versatile clothing. Bring 5-7 days worth of quick-dry clothing that mixes and matches. Include 1 nice outfit for nicer restaurants or events. Avoid cotton except for underwear. Pack 2 pairs of shoes maximum - hiking boots and comfortable walking shoes.
  5. Add region-specific gear. Pack altitude sickness medication, strong sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent with DEET, water purification tablets, and a headlamp with extra batteries. Include a universal plug adapter and portable charger.
How much should my packed backpack weigh?
Keep it under 20% of your body weight, ideally 15-18kg (33-40lbs) maximum. Remember you'll be carrying this up hostel stairs and onto buses regularly.
Should I pack camping gear?
Only if you plan specific camping trips. Accommodation is cheap enough across South America that carrying camping gear usually isn't worth the weight and hassle.
What about laundry?
Laundry services are available everywhere and cheap ($2-5 per load). Pack 5-7 days of clothes and plan to do laundry weekly rather than overpacking.
Do I need special electronics?
Bring a universal adapter, portable charger, and consider a travel router for better WiFi. Camera gear should be minimal - your phone plus maybe one small camera.
