Pack for a Couple's Trip to Europe

Each person needs 5-7 days of mix-and-match clothing in neutral colors, one versatile jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and a small daypack. Share toiletries and tech chargers to save space. Pack everything in carry-on bags to avoid checked baggage fees and lost luggage stress.

  1. Coordinate your color palette before you pack. Sit down together and agree on 2-3 neutral base colors (black, navy, gray, khaki). This lets you share accessories like scarves or belts, and every piece works with everything else. You'll pack less and still have outfit variety.
  2. Pack 5-7 days of clothing regardless of trip length. Each person gets one week of clothing maximum. You'll do laundry once during a 2-week trip, twice during a 3-week trip. Most European hotels and Airbnbs have washers, or you'll find laundromats. This keeps you both at carry-on size.
  3. Split shared items between bags. Put toothpaste in one bag, shampoo in the other. Phone charger in one, laptop charger in the other. If an airline loses one bag, you both still have basics. Also pack one full outfit and underwear in each other's bag as backup.
  4. Each person carries their own daypack. You need two small backpacks or crossbody bags for daily sightseeing. Never share one bag—when you want to split up at a museum or one person needs the restroom, you each have your wallet, phone, and water. 15-20 liter capacity is plenty.
  5. Pack one nice outfit each for dinners. Europe dresses up more than North America for evening meals. Each person needs one outfit that works at a nice restaurant: women need a dress or dark pants with a blouse, men need dark pants and a collared shirt. These pieces can mix with casual wear during the day.
Should we each pack our own toiletries or share one set?
Share one set. Put items in TSA-approved containers and split them between your bags in case one gets lost. You'll save space and weight. The only exception is if you have very specific product requirements.
Can two people really manage with just carry-on bags?
Yes. Each person gets a 22-inch carry-on and a personal item like a backpack. That's enough for 2-3 weeks if you do laundry once. You'll avoid checked bag fees ($60-120 per person round trip) and never wait at baggage claim.
What if we're going to both warm and cold destinations?
Layer. Pack for the coldest destination, then remove layers for warm days. Each person needs a base layer, mid layer (fleece or sweater), and outer shell jacket. You can wear these on the plane to save luggage space.
How do we pack nice shoes without taking up too much space?
Each person wears their bulkiest shoes on the plane and packs one pair of flat, flexible shoes. Women can pack foldable ballet flats or slim sandals. Men can pack minimal sneakers or slip-ons that work for both walking and dinner.
Should we bring one shared camera or use our phones?
Bring one camera if one of you is serious about photography. Otherwise, use your phones and bring one small portable battery pack to share. Modern phones take excellent photos and you're already carrying them.
