Mastering Vancouver’s TransLink System

Use a Compass Card or a contactless credit card to tap in and out across the SkyTrain, SeaBus, and bus networks. The system is zoned, so always tap out on trains and the SeaBus to ensure you are charged the correct fare.

  1. Get a payment method. Purchase a reusable Compass Card at any SkyTrain station vending machine for a $6 refundable deposit. Alternatively, just tap your contactless credit card, debit card, or mobile wallet (Apple Pay/Google Pay) directly on the readers.
  2. Understand the zones. The SkyTrain and SeaBus use a three-zone system. Travel within one zone costs $3.15, two zones $4.45, and three zones $6.05. Buses are always a single flat fare, regardless of how many zones you cross.
  3. Tap in and tap out. Always tap your card on the circular reader when entering and exiting SkyTrain stations and SeaBus terminals. On buses, only tap when boarding—never tap when exiting.
  4. Take advantage of the 90-minute window. Your fare includes 90 minutes of unlimited transfers between buses, SkyTrains, and the SeaBus. You can even transfer between modes as long as your last tap-in is within that 90-minute window.
Do I need to carry physical cash?
No. TransLink is nearly cashless. Contactless payment is accepted on every bus and train.
Can I use my phone to pay?
Yes, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay all work perfectly on the card readers.
What happens if I forget to tap out?
The system will automatically charge you the maximum three-zone fare for that journey.
