Cómo usar el sistema de metro y metrocable de Medellín

To use Medellín's public transit, purchase a 'Cívica' card at any station ticket window and load it with enough credit for your trips. Tap the card on the turnstile to enter, and use the same card to transfer between the Metro, Metrocable, and tram lines at no extra cost.

1. Buy a Cívica card. Go to any Metro station ticket office and ask for a 'Cívica eventual' (anonymous card) or a personalized one if you are staying longer. It costs 10,500 COP. You must have a card; cash is not accepted at the turnstiles.
2. Load your card. Use the ticket office or the automated kiosks to add credit. A single trip costs roughly 3,200 COP. Load at least 20,000 COP if you plan on exploring for a full day.
3. Entering the station. Look for the turnstiles with the Cívica logo. Tap your card on the blue circular reader. The screen will display your remaining balance.
4. Navigating the lines. Line A (the main north-south metro line) is your primary transit artery. To access the Metrocable lines (like Line K to Santo Domingo), simply follow the signs for 'Transferencia' within the station. You do not need to pay a second fare if you remain within the system.

Can I pay for multiple people with one card?

No. Each person must have their own Cívica card to pass through the turnstiles.

Are the Metrocables included in the price?

Yes, if you transfer from the Metro system within the station, the cable car ride is included in your base fare.

Is the system safe?

The metro system is exceptionally safe and clean. Keep your backpack on your front in crowded areas, as you would in any major city.
