How to Ferry Hop Between Adriatic Islands
Book your tickets through Jadrolinija or Krilo websites at least 24 hours in advance to secure a spot, especially for high-speed catamarans. Always arrive at the ferry port 45 minutes before departure to handle boarding logistics and luggage storage.
- Select your operator. Use Jadrolinija for state-run, reliable, and slower car ferries. Use Krilo (Kapetan Luka) for high-speed catamarans that only take foot passengers and are significantly faster between major islands like Split, Hvar, and Korčula.
- Master the booking portal. Download the official apps or use the websites to book. Tickets for catamarans often sell out 3–5 days in advance during July and August. You do not need to print tickets; a QR code on your phone is sufficient for boarding.
- Check the Bura wind reports. The 'Bura' (a strong northern wind) frequently cancels catamaran sailings. Check the 'Jadrolinija' website or Twitter feed for real-time disruption updates before heading to the terminal.
- Master the boarding process. For large car ferries, board through the vehicle ramp if you are a foot passenger (look for the designated line). For catamarans, join the queue at the marked pier number at least 30 minutes before departure.
- Can I bring my luggage on the catamaran?
- Yes. Most catamarans have a designated rack at the back of the boat. If you have large suitcases, arrive early to get a spot on the rack; otherwise, you will have to keep it in the aisle.
- Are ferries cheaper if I buy them at the port?
- No. The price is identical, and buying at the port during peak season risks the boat being sold out.
