Navigating the Hong Kong MTR with a Stroller

Use the wide-gate elevators located at every station to avoid turnstiles, and always check the station maps on the MTR app beforehand to locate the street-level lift access points. Most MTR carriages have designated multi-purpose spaces for strollers near the wheelchair areas.

  1. Download the MTR Mobile App. Use the 'Station Facilities' filter in the app to identify elevators that go from street level to the concourse and from the concourse to the platforms. Not all exits have elevators.
  2. Locate Wide Gates. Do not attempt to use standard turnstiles. Look for the wide gates, usually staffed by an MTR employee, which allow for seamless stroller entry and exit.
  3. Positioning in the Carriage. Aim for the ends of the train carriages where there is a multi-purpose area. This space is designed for wheelchairs and is the most stroller-friendly spot.
  4. Timing Your Commute. Avoid the morning (8:00–9:30 AM) and evening (5:30–7:00 PM) rush hours. The trains are physically packed, and getting a stroller on or off is difficult and stressful.
Can I keep my child in the stroller on the train?
Yes, but you must hold the brake firmly or keep a strong grip on the handle, as the trains accelerate and brake quickly.
What happens if the elevator is broken?
Look for the yellow 'Help' intercom button near the elevator or at the gates. MTR staff will guide you to the nearest working lift or assist you with the stroller if absolutely necessary.
