How to Plan a Trip to Uzbekistan
Plan a 10-day loop starting in Tashkent, moving to Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva by train. You will need to obtain an e-visa in advance and carry cash, as credit cards are not widely accepted outside major hotels.
- Secure your visa. Check if your country qualifies for visa-free entry. If not, apply for the E-visa via the official Uzbekistan E-visa portal at least 14 days before your departure. Print a copy of your approved visa.
- Book domestic trains early. Use the official O'zbekiston Temir Yo'llari website to book Afrosiyob (high-speed) train tickets between Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. These sell out weeks in advance.
- Prepare your money. Bring crisp, new US Dollar bills to exchange for Uzbek Som (UZS) at banks or exchange offices. ATMs are available in cities but often run out of cash or reject foreign cards.
- Register your stay. If staying in hostels or guesthouses, ensure they provide you with a paper registration slip (propiska) for every night. You may be asked for these at exit immigration.
- Is it safe to travel alone?
- Yes, Uzbekistan is very safe, and locals are generally helpful and welcoming.
- Do I need to speak Russian or Uzbek?
- Russian is widely understood by older generations, but English is becoming common in the tourism industry.
