How to Visit Cambodia and Angkor Wat

Fly into Siem Reap to explore the Angkor Archaeological Park using a three-day temple pass. Spend your mornings at the ruins and your afternoons resting to avoid the midday heat, using a hired tuk-tuk driver to navigate between sites.

  1. Get your pass. Purchase your Angkor Pass online via the official Angkor Enterprise website or at the official ticket center outside the park. A 3-day pass costs $62 USD and is valid for any three days within a one-week period.
  2. Hire a driver. Do not attempt to walk or cycle the park; it is massive. Negotiate a daily rate with a tuk-tuk driver through your accommodation. Expect to pay $15–$25 USD per day for them to drop you off and pick you up at each temple gate.
  3. Plan the temple circuits. Use the 'Small Circuit' for the major highlights (Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm) on Day 1, and the 'Grand Circuit' for the further-out temples (Preah Khan, Neak Pean) on Day 2. Reserve Day 3 for a sunrise return to your favorite site or a trip to Banteay Srei.
  4. Dress appropriately. Cambodia is conservative. You must cover your shoulders and knees to enter any temple. Bring a lightweight sarong or a linen shirt; if you show up in a tank top, you will be denied entry.
Can I use credit cards at the temples?
No. Bring enough US cash for your daily driver, food, and water. You can use cards in some hotels and upscale restaurants in Siem Reap, but cash is king.
What is the best way to see the sunrise?
Tell your tuk-tuk driver the night before that you want to be at the Angkor Wat reflecting pool by 5:15 AM. Expect hundreds of others to be there with you.
