How to Spend Two Weeks in New Zealand
Two weeks gives you enough time to see both North and South Islands properly. Fly into Auckland, work your way south through Rotorua and Wellington, then ferry to the South Island for Marlborough, Canterbury, and Otago. Budget $150-200 NZD per day including car rental, accommodation, and activities.
- Days 1-3: Auckland and surroundings. Land in Auckland. Spend one day in the city (Sky Tower, waterfront), one day on Waiheke Island for wineries, one day driving to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves if you want glowworms.
- Days 4-6: Rotorua and Taupo. Base in Rotorua for geothermal parks (Te Puia or Wai-O-Tapu), Maori cultural experience, and adventure activities. Day trip to Lake Taupo for the Huka Falls walk.
- Days 7-8: Wellington. Drive to Wellington (4.5 hours from Rotorua). One day for Te Papa museum and city exploration, one day for day trip to Martinborough wine region or just Wellington harbor activities.
- Day 9: Ferry to South Island. Take the 3.5-hour Interislander ferry from Wellington to Picton. Book your car on the ferry in advance. Drive to Nelson or stay in Picton for the night.
- Days 10-11: Marlborough and Nelson. Wine tasting in Marlborough (Cloudy Bay, Oyster Bay regions). Drive to Nelson for Abel Tasman National Park day trip or coastal walks.
- Days 12-14: Canterbury and Otago. Drive to Christchurch (4 hours). One day in the city, then either Mount Cook National Park day trip or drive to Queenstown for adventure activities and Milford Sound day trip.
- Do I need to book the ferry in advance?
- Yes, especially if you're taking a car. The Interislander ferry between Wellington and Picton gets booked out, particularly in summer. Book at least a week ahead.
- Can I do this trip without a car?
- Possible but limiting. InterCity buses connect major towns, but you'll miss smaller spots and flexibility. Budget extra time and money for tours to places like Milford Sound or wine regions.
- Is two weeks enough for both islands?
- Yes, but you'll be moving regularly. This itinerary covers the highlights without rushing. If you prefer slower travel, pick one island and do it properly.
- What if I only have one week?
- Stick to one island. North Island: Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington. South Island: Christchurch, Mount Cook, Queenstown. Don't try to do both islands in one week.
