Planning a Trip to Fiji

Fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN) and decide immediately if you are staying on the mainland or heading to an island resort via ferry or seaplane. Book your inter-island transfers in advance, as these are not as frequent as mainland transport.

  1. Choose your island group. The Mamanucas are best for quick access and resort convenience; the Yasawas offer more budget-friendly hostels and rugged landscapes; Viti Levu (the mainland) is best for renting a car and exploring waterfalls and local villages.
  2. Sync with the ferry schedule. Most island-hopping ferries like the South Sea Cruises boat leave Nadi (Port Denarau) at 8:30 AM or 12:00 PM. Arrange your flights to land by 7:00 AM or stay one night in Nadi to avoid missing the boat.
  3. Book inter-island transport separately. Do not assume your resort covers boat transfers. Check the 'Awesome Adventures' or 'South Sea Cruises' websites to book your seat on the Bula Pass or specific resort transfers.
  4. Pack for the climate. Bring high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag. Fiji is humid; leave the heavy jeans and sweaters at home and stick to linen or moisture-wicking fabrics.
Do I need local currency?
Yes, carry Fijian Dollars (FJD). While resorts accept credit cards, local markets and village shops strictly require cash.
Is it safe to drink the tap water?
Stick to bottled or filtered water in remote islands; mainland water is generally treated but sensitive stomachs should stick to bottled.
