Planning a Trip to Bhutan
You must book your trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or an international partner, as independent travel is not permitted. You are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 USD per night per adult, which is paid directly to the government during the visa application process.
- Select a Licensed Tour Operator. Visit the Tourism Council of Bhutan website to browse the list of certified local tour operators. Do not book through third-party aggregators that are not registered in Bhutan.
- Define Your Route. Work with your operator to design an itinerary. Most first-time visitors stick to the 'Golden Triangle' route: Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha.
- Apply for Your Visa. Once you pay your tour deposit and the SDF, your operator will submit your visa application. You will receive an electronic visa (e-visa) via email to print and show upon arrival.
- Book Your Flights. Flights into Paro (PBH) are only operated by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. Book these early, as seats are limited and flights are frequently delayed by weather.
- Can I explore Bhutan on my own?
- No. Bhutan requires all international visitors to be accompanied by a licensed local guide for the duration of their trip.
- Is altitude sickness common?
- Yes, especially on the drive to Punakha. Drink plenty of water, pace yourself, and talk to your guide about keeping your itinerary flexible.
