Planning a Trip to Bhutan

You must book your trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or an international partner, as independent travel is not permitted. You are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 USD per night per adult, which is paid directly to the government during the visa application process.

  1. Select a Licensed Tour Operator. Visit the Tourism Council of Bhutan website to browse the list of certified local tour operators. Do not book through third-party aggregators that are not registered in Bhutan.
  2. Define Your Route. Work with your operator to design an itinerary. Most first-time visitors stick to the 'Golden Triangle' route: Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha.
  3. Apply for Your Visa. Once you pay your tour deposit and the SDF, your operator will submit your visa application. You will receive an electronic visa (e-visa) via email to print and show upon arrival.
  4. Book Your Flights. Flights into Paro (PBH) are only operated by Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines. Book these early, as seats are limited and flights are frequently delayed by weather.
Can I explore Bhutan on my own?
No. Bhutan requires all international visitors to be accompanied by a licensed local guide for the duration of their trip.
Is altitude sickness common?
Yes, especially on the drive to Punakha. Drink plenty of water, pace yourself, and talk to your guide about keeping your itinerary flexible.
