How to Plan a Trip to Jordan and Petra
Fly into Amman and rent a car for the most efficient travel experience. Spend at least 3 days in Petra to properly see the Siq, the Treasury, and the Monastery without rushing.
- Secure the Jordan Pass. Buy the Jordan Pass online before you arrive. It covers your tourist visa fee and provides free entry to over 40 sites, including Petra. Choose the 'Jordan Explorer' option to include 3 days of entry to Petra.
- Rent a car in Amman. Driving is the best way to see Jordan. Renting a car gives you flexibility. Pick up the vehicle at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM). The roads to Petra (Desert Highway or King's Highway) are well-marked in English.
- Time your arrival at Petra. Arrive at the Petra Visitor Center at 6:00 AM sharp when the gates open. This allows you to walk through the Siq before the tour buses arrive at 9:00 AM.
- Dress for the terrain. Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots. You will walk 15,000 to 20,000 steps per day on uneven sandstone and gravel.
- Is it safe to drive in Jordan?
- Yes, the main highways are safe and easy to navigate. Avoid driving at night due to limited lighting and potential stray animals on rural roads.
- Do I need a guide for Petra?
- You don't need one, but hiring a local Bedouin guide for a few hours can help you find lesser-known paths and historical context you won't get from a map.
