Visiting Dubai for the First Time
Focus your first trip on the contrast between the modern Downtown area and the historical Deira district. Use the Dubai Metro for main transit and budget 3 full days to cover the highlights without burning out in the heat.
- Use the Metro and Taxis. Buy a Nol card immediately upon arrival for the Metro. For areas the train doesn't reach, use the Careem app to book RTA taxis; they are metered, reliable, and cheaper than private limousines.
- Dress for the culture. Dress modestly in public spaces like malls and markets—keep shoulders and knees covered. While tourist beaches are lenient, wearing swimwear outside of beach clubs or hotels is considered disrespectful.
- Book attraction tickets in advance. Buy tickets for the Burj Khalifa (At the Top) and the Museum of the Future at least 2 weeks before you arrive. Walk-up tickets are almost always sold out or significantly more expensive.
- Navigate the heat. Plan all outdoor walking—like the Souks or the Dubai Frame—for before 10:00 AM or after 5:00 PM. Use the midday hours to explore indoor malls or rest at your hotel.
- Is it safe to drink the tap water?
- Technically yes, but it is heavily desalinated and tastes like plastic. Most locals and tourists drink bottled water exclusively.
- Can I use alcohol in public?
- No. Alcohol is strictly regulated and only served in licensed venues like hotels and bars. Public intoxication is a serious legal offense.
