Planning Your First Trip to the Philippines

To plan a successful trip to the Philippines, focus on one or two regions rather than trying to see the entire archipelago. Use domestic flights to connect major islands, as ferries are slow and unreliable during monsoon season.

  1. Choose your primary region. The Philippines is 7,000+ islands. Pick Palawan (El Nido/Coron) for lagoons and limestone cliffs, or the Visayas (Cebu/Bohol) for diving, waterfalls, and tarsiers. Don't try to mix both in less than 10 days.
  2. Book domestic 'hub' flights early. Fly into Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB). Use carriers like Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines to reach island airports. Book these at least 6 weeks out; prices rise sharply as departure nears.
  3. Schedule around the weather. Travel between December and April (dry season). If you travel from June to October, expect typhoons and cancelled ferry/flight routes. Always build in a 24-hour buffer for travel days.
  4. Use local transport wisely. In cities, use the 'Grab' app for cars. On islands, hire a tricycle or rent a scooter if you have an international driving permit. Avoid long-distance ferries unless you have extra time to spare for delays.
Do I need to carry cash?
Yes. Outside of malls in Manila and Cebu, most places are cash-only. Keep small denominations for tricycles.
Is it safe for solo travelers?
The Philippines is generally safe. Stick to the main tourist islands and use common sense, especially at night.
Should I drink the tap water?
No. Always drink bottled or filtered water, even in hotels.
