Visiting Bhutan for the First Time

To visit Bhutan, you must book your trip through a licensed local tour operator or international partner to arrange your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and visa. Plan to spend at least 6 days to see the core circuit of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha without rushing.

  1. Select a Licensed Tour Operator. Bhutan requires all tourists to be on a pre-booked itinerary. Visit the Tourism Council of Bhutan website to verify that your operator is licensed. Do not attempt to book flights or hotels independently.
  2. Pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). The SDF is $100 USD per adult per night. Your tour operator will collect this from you and pay it to the government as part of your total trip cost.
  3. Apply for your Visa. Once your tour is paid and your SDF is cleared, your operator will submit your passport details for an e-visa. You will receive a PDF clearance letter to print and show at the airport check-in.
  4. Book your Flights. Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Paro. These flights are often delayed by weather, so book your international connection with at least 24 hours of buffer time.
Can I travel to Bhutan solo?
Yes, but you will pay a 'single supplement' fee for accommodation and transport because you are still required to hire a guide and driver.
Is internet access available?
Most hotels provide basic Wi-Fi, and you can purchase a local SIM card (B-Mobile or TashiCell) at the airport for mobile data.
Are credit cards accepted?
Only in larger hotels and high-end souvenir shops. Carry enough cash (USD or local Ngultrum) for all other expenses.
