Gate checking a stroller like a pro
Gate checking involves bringing your stroller through security and dropping it at the end of the jet bridge right before you board. You will receive a claim tag from the gate agent, attach it to your stroller, and fold it for the ground crew to load into the aircraft belly.
- Clear it with the gate agent. As soon as you reach your departure gate, approach the agent and ask for a gate-check tag. Do this at least 30 minutes before boarding begins so you don't hold up the line.
- Strip the stroller. Remove cup holders, snack trays, loose blankets, and rain covers. Anything not permanently attached to the frame has a high chance of falling off or being lost in transit.
- Fold and tag. Attach the airline-provided tag securely to the frame. Ensure the tag is visible. Keep your stroller fully assembled until you are at the very end of the jet bridge.
- Stow for the crew. Fold the stroller down at the aircraft door. Wait for the ramp agent to take it from you. Never leave your stroller unattended on the jet bridge without the gate agent's okay.
- Will I get my stroller back at the jet bridge?
- Usually, yes. Most airlines return gate-checked items to the jet bridge upon arrival. If you are on a smaller regional jet, they might send it to baggage claim instead; always ask the flight attendant before you deplane.
- What if my stroller is too big?
- If you have a full-sized 'travel system' or a stroller over 20 lbs, some airlines may force you to check it at the ticket counter. Check your airline’s specific 'Size and Weight' policy for strollers before heading to the airport.
