Flying with Kids Using Only Carry-Ons
Families can fly carry-on only by packing one shared checked-size bag as a gate-check, using compression cubes for clothes, and distributing weight across adult carry-ons and kids' personal items. Each adult gets a full-size carry-on plus personal item, while kids under 2 fly on your lap and kids 2+ get their own seat with a personal item allowance.
- Know Your Actual Bag Allowance. Each ticketed passenger gets one carry-on (22x14x9 inches or 56x36x23 cm) plus one personal item (18x14x8 inches or 45x35x20 cm). Children under 2 sitting on your lap get only a personal item — usually a diaper bag. Kids 2+ with their own seat get the full allowance but may struggle with overhead bins, so use their personal item slot for a small backpack with entertainment and snacks.
- Pack One Shared Bag to Gate-Check Free. Bring a regular checked-size rolling suitcase (28 inches) packed with bulky items like diapers, wipes, extra shoes, and backup clothes. Check it at the gate for free on most airlines — you hand it over at the jetway and pick it up at the jetway when you land. This doesn't count against your carry-on allowance and solves the bulk problem without checked bag fees.
- Use Compression Cubes for Clothes. Roll and compress each family member's clothes into separate cubes. A family of four can fit 5-7 days of clothes into two adult carry-ons using this method. Put one complete outfit per person in your personal items in case the gate-checked bag goes missing — rare but possible on tight connections.
- Distribute Weight Across All Bags. Adults carry the heavy stuff. Put tablets, chargers, toiletries, and books in adult personal items. Kids carry their own entertainment in small backpacks — coloring books, small toys, headphones, snacks. A 5-year-old can handle a small backpack. A 10-year-old can carry a light carry-on if needed. Do not let kids carry valuables or essentials.
- Board Early and Claim Bin Space. Families with small children board early on most airlines. Use this. Get your adult carry-ons in the overhead bins directly above or across from your seats before the bins fill up. Personal items go under the seat in front of you. Gate-checked bag goes to the agent at the door.
- Pack a Separate Snack and Entertainment Bag. Use one personal item as the dedicated in-flight bag. Pack it last so it is on top. Include: snacks for every hour of flight time, empty water bottles to fill after security, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, one new small toy per child as a surprise, headphones, tablets loaded with downloads, and a phone charger. Do not bury this bag in the overhead bin.
- What if my gate-checked bag doesn't come out at the jetway?
- It will come out on the regular baggage carousel. This happens on smaller planes or busy flights. Wait at baggage claim like a checked bag. Your bag was still free, just not jetway-delivered.
- Can I bring a car seat as a carry-on?
- Yes, if your child has their own seat. The car seat does not count against your carry-on allowance on US airlines. It goes in the seat, not the overhead bin. You can also gate-check it for free. Strollers also gate-check free and do not count against allowance.
- What about liquid formula or breast milk?
- Medically necessary liquids for infants are exempt from the 3.4 oz rule. Bring what you need in reasonable quantities. Inform TSA officers at security. They may test it. Freeze breast milk in bags to keep it cold longer — frozen liquids are allowed through security.
- How do I handle diaper changes on the plane?
- Pack a small changing pad, 2 diapers per hour of flight, wipes, and disposal bags in your personal item. Most plane bathrooms have a fold-down changing table. If not, change on your lap with the changing pad. Put dirty diapers in a disposal bag before throwing in the bathroom trash.
- Will my carry-on get gate-checked if the bins are full?
- Possibly on full flights. If this happens, they gate-check it for free and return it at the jetway or baggage claim. To avoid this, board as early as your group allows and put your bag in the bin immediately. Families with small children usually board in early groups.
- What if we need more stuff than fits in carry-ons?
- Ship bulky items to your destination via UPS or Amazon. Ship a box of diapers to your hotel for $15 instead of packing them. Or accept that you will check one bag and still save money compared to checking multiple bags. The goal is fewer bags, not zero bags if it doesn't work for your family.
