Planning a Safari in Kenya Starting from Nairobi

Fly into Nairobi and spend at least 6 days total to allow for travel time between parks. Book a reputable tour operator at least 4 months in advance to secure transport and park entry permits.

  1. Select your circuit. For a first-timer, stick to the 'Circuit' route: Nairobi to Maasai Mara (for the Great Migration) and Lake Nakuru or Amboseli (for scenery/elephants). Don't try to visit more than three parks in one week.
  2. Hire a private driver-guide. Do not attempt to drive yourself unless you are experienced with off-road terrain. Book a private 4x4 land cruiser through a local operator based in Nairobi. It will cost more, but ensures you have a guide who knows how to spot animals and navigate mud.
  3. Secure your eTA. Apply for the Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) at least 3 weeks before departure. You cannot board your flight without it.
  4. Budget for park fees. Kenya increased park entry fees significantly in 2024. Budget $100–$200 per person, per day, just for park access fees in premium areas like the Maasai Mara.
Is it safe to drink the tap water?
No. Only drink bottled or filtered water provided by your lodge.
Should I tip my safari guide?
Yes. Tipping $15–$20 per day for your driver-guide is the standard expectation.
