Visiting Iran as an American Citizen
American citizens must visit Iran as part of a pre-arranged, government-approved guided tour with a licensed guide at all times. You cannot travel independently, and you must apply for your visa through a specialized agency at least three months before your departure date.
- Hire an authorized tour operator. Find a reputable Iranian tour agency that specializes in handling American citizens. They must submit your detailed itinerary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to request your authorization code.
- Submit your documentation. Provide your agency with a detailed CV (work history), a scan of your passport, a digital headshot, and your intended travel dates. This process typically takes 45 to 60 days to receive approval.
- Apply for the visa. Once you have your authorization code, submit your visa application to the nearest Iranian interests section (often located within the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, D.C. for U.S. residents) to receive the visa stamp in your passport.
- Secure your guide. Once in Iran, you are legally required to be accompanied by a government-approved guide for your entire stay. Your agency will assign this person, and you must adhere strictly to the planned itinerary.
- Can I use my credit card in Iran?
- No. Due to international sanctions, all foreign credit and debit cards are useless. You must carry enough cash for your entire trip plus an emergency buffer.
- Am I allowed to walk around the city alone?
- No. As an American, you must be accompanied by your guide at all times while in public spaces.
- Is it safe for Americans to travel there?
- While the Iranian people are known for being exceptionally hospitable, the political relationship between the U.S. and Iran is volatile. Travel involves significant risks; consult your government's travel advisory before planning.
