Applying for your first passport: A realistic timeline

A first-time passport application typically takes 6 to 8 weeks for standard processing. If you pay an additional $60 for expedited service, you can receive it in 2 to 3 weeks.

  1. Gather your citizenship evidence. Locate your original, government-issued birth certificate or certificate of naturalization. Photocopies are not accepted.
  2. Complete Form DS-11. Fill out the DS-11 form online, print it, but do not sign it until a passport agent instructs you to do so at your appointment.
  3. Get a compliant passport photo. Visit a pharmacy or post office to get a 2x2 inch photo with a white background. Wear plain clothing and ensure no glasses are worn.
  4. Schedule and attend an appointment. First-time applicants must apply in person. Visit a local post office or clerk of court. Bring your application, ID, and payment.
Can I speed up the process even more?
If you have international travel booked within 14 days, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency for 'Life-or-Death Emergency' or 'Urgent Travel' processing.
What if my passport doesn't arrive on time?
Use the online status tracking tool provided by the Department of State. If it is beyond the quoted window, call the National Passport Information Center immediately.
