Applying for your first passport: A realistic timeline
A first-time passport application typically takes 6 to 8 weeks for standard processing. If you pay an additional $60 for expedited service, you can receive it in 2 to 3 weeks.
- Gather your citizenship evidence. Locate your original, government-issued birth certificate or certificate of naturalization. Photocopies are not accepted.
- Complete Form DS-11. Fill out the DS-11 form online, print it, but do not sign it until a passport agent instructs you to do so at your appointment.
- Get a compliant passport photo. Visit a pharmacy or post office to get a 2x2 inch photo with a white background. Wear plain clothing and ensure no glasses are worn.
- Schedule and attend an appointment. First-time applicants must apply in person. Visit a local post office or clerk of court. Bring your application, ID, and payment.
- Can I speed up the process even more?
- If you have international travel booked within 14 days, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency for 'Life-or-Death Emergency' or 'Urgent Travel' processing.
- What if my passport doesn't arrive on time?
- Use the online status tracking tool provided by the Department of State. If it is beyond the quoted window, call the National Passport Information Center immediately.
