Planning a Zanzibar Family Beach Holiday

Focus your trip on the northern beaches of Nungwi or Kendwa, where tidal changes are minimal and the water remains swimmable all day. Book a family-friendly resort with a pool, as ocean currents can be strong for young children.

  1. Choose the right beach. Stick to the north (Nungwi/Kendwa). East coast beaches experience massive low tides where the water recedes up to 1km, making swimming impossible for half the day. The north has consistent, deep, calm water.
  2. Arrange private airport transfers. Do not use local taxis without prior arrangement. Email your resort 48 hours before arrival to book a private transfer with a car seat, as public transport (dala-dalas) is not suitable for families with luggage and small children.
  3. Schedule excursions for the mornings. Plan your spice tours or Stone Town visits between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Afternoons are too hot for children, and the sun intensity is significantly higher than in Europe or North America.
  4. Pre-book a malaria prophylaxis plan. Zanzibar is a malaria-risk area. Consult your pediatrician 6 weeks before travel to get age-appropriate malaria medication and ensure all routine vaccinations are up to date.
Is the tap water safe for children?
No. Always use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth to prevent stomach bugs.
Can I bring a stroller?
Most of the island has sandy paths or uneven stone streets in Stone Town. A lightweight carrier or hiking backpack for toddlers is much more practical.
