Seven Days in Jordan: A Practical Itinerary
Cover Jordan's major sites by renting a car and driving south from Amman to Aqaba. Focus your time on the ruins of Jerash, the desert wilderness of Wadi Rum, and the ancient city of Petra.
- Secure a Jordan Pass. Buy the Jordan Pass online before you land. It covers your visa fee and entry to over 40 sites, including Petra. It saves you at least $60 USD.
- Rent a car. Public transport is unreliable for a 7-day loop. Renting a car at Amman airport gives you the freedom to drive the Desert Highway or the scenic Kings Highway.
- Book Petra accommodations early. Stay in Wadi Musa to be at the gates of Petra by 6:00 AM. Walking in early beats the tour bus crowds that arrive from Amman around 10:00 AM.
- Is driving in Jordan safe?
- Yes. Roads are generally well-paved, but watch out for speed bumps that aren't marked and heavy trucks on the Desert Highway.
- Can I drink the tap water?
- No. Always stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.
