Planning a North-to-South Vietnam Backpacking Route
Travel from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City over 21 days to cover the country's main highlights without rushing. Use a mix of overnight trains and short-haul flights to bridge long distances and maximize your time on the ground.
- Secure your visa first. Apply for the Vietnam e-visa at least 14 days before your departure. Most nationalities get a 90-day multiple-entry permit; don't leave this until the last minute.
- Decide on your transport strategy. Book internal flights (e.g., Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City) via Vietnam Airlines or VietJet if you are on a tight schedule. For shorter legs, use the 'Reunification Express' train or reputable bus companies like 'The Sinh Tourist'.
- Map your major stops. Stick to the coast: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat, and Ho Chi Minh City. This is the classic path and the infrastructure is built to support it.
- Download Grab and local apps. Install the Grab app for taxis and motorbike taxis. Use '12Go Asia' to book train and bus tickets in advance during peak season (February to April).
- Should I rent a motorbike?
- Only if you have a valid International Driving Permit and experience. The traffic in Hanoi and HCMC is dangerous for beginners.
- Is it safe to travel solo?
- Vietnam is very safe for solo travelers. Use common sense, keep your passport in a locker, and use registered transport apps.
