Planning a Gorilla Trekking Expedition in Uganda

Gorilla trekking requires securing a permit at least 4-6 months in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You must fly into Entebbe, take a domestic flight or a 9-hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and spend at least 3 days on the ground to account for travel and trekking exhaustion.

Secure your Gorilla Permit. Permits cost $800 USD per person. Apply via the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) website or a reputable local operator. Without this physical permit, you will not be allowed near the gorillas.
Choose your sector. Bwindi has four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Book your accommodation in the same sector as your trekking permit to avoid a 3-hour pre-dawn drive on mountain roads.
Book transport. If you are short on time, book a domestic flight from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips. If driving, hire a 4x4 vehicle with a driver who knows the terrain; do not attempt to self-drive during the rainy season.
Prepare for the altitude and terrain. Trekking involves steep, muddy inclines at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters. Begin a light cardio routine 4 weeks before your trip to ensure you can handle 3-6 hours of hiking.
