How to Hike the Torres del Paine W Trek
The W Trek takes 4-5 days covering 71km through Torres del Paine National Park. Book refugios or campsites 6+ months ahead, carry all gear for Patagonian weather, and expect to spend $80-120 per day including accommodation and meals.
- Book accommodation 6+ months in advance. Reserve beds at Refugio Las Torres, Cuernos del Paine, Refugio Grey, and either Refugio Central or camping spots. Use Fantastico Sur and Vertice Patagonia websites. Peak season (December-February) fills up fastest.
- Plan your 4-5 day route. Start at Las Torres Base and end at Grey Glacier, or reverse. Most hikers do: Day 1 - Base Torres viewpoint, Day 2 - Cuernos del Paine, Day 3 - French Valley, Day 4 - Grey Glacier. Add an extra day if doing the full French Valley extension.
- Get to Puerto Natales. Fly into Punta Arenas (PUQ) then take a 3-hour bus to Puerto Natales ($15). Book buses with Bus Sur or Buses Fernandez. Stay overnight in Puerto Natales before the trek.
- Take park transport. Book the Las Torres bus from Puerto Natales (leaves 6:30am, 2.5 hours, $25). Return via catamaran from Grey Glacier to Pudeto then bus back to Puerto Natales ($45 combined).
- Pack for all weather conditions. Bring waterproof jacket and pants, warm layers, sturdy hiking boots, sleeping bag rated to 0°C, headlamp, and trekking poles. Weather changes fast - pack for rain, wind, and cold even in summer.
- Carry enough food and water. Refugios sell meals but are expensive ($25+ for dinner). Bring trail snacks and lunch supplies. Water is available at refugios - carry 2-3 liters capacity and purification tablets for stream water.
- Can I do the W Trek without booking ahead?
- Not reliably during peak season (December-February). Refugios fill up 6+ months in advance. You might find camping spots, but bring all camping gear. Shoulder seasons (November, March) have more availability.
- How difficult is the W Trek physically?
- Moderate to challenging. Daily distances of 8-11km with significant elevation gains. The Base Torres and French Valley days are the most demanding. Good hiking fitness required - train with loaded pack beforehand.
- What if weather turns bad during the trek?
- Patagonian weather changes quickly. Refugios provide shelter during storms. Rangers may close trails in extreme conditions. Always carry full weather protection and be prepared to wait out bad weather.
- Can I rent gear in Puerto Natales?
- Yes, several shops rent sleeping bags, trekking poles, backpacks, and rain gear. Erratic Rock and other outfitters have good selection. Book ahead during peak season. Expect $15-25 per item per day.
- Is the W Trek suitable for beginners?
- Possible but challenging for hiking beginners. The trail is well-marked but requires good fitness, proper gear, and ability to handle unpredictable weather. Consider shorter day hikes first if new to multi-day trekking.
