How long to spend trekking in Torres del Paine

Spend 5 days to complete the W-Trek, which covers the park's main highlights, or 8 to 9 days for the full O-Circuit. Anything less than 4 days is insufficient to reach the major viewpoints due to the logistics of park transport.

  1. Decide on your route. Choose the W-Trek (5 days) if you want to see the Grey Glacier, French Valley, and Base of the Towers. Choose the O-Circuit (8-9 days) if you want the full loop experience, including the remote backside of the mountains.
  2. Account for travel days. Add 2 days to your itinerary for transit. It takes 5 hours to travel by bus from Puerto Natales to the park entrance. Do not attempt to hike on the day you arrive from international flights.
  3. Check campsite availability. Your trekking duration is often dictated by campsite bookings. Use the Vertice and Las Torres websites to see which nights are available; if your preferred dates are booked, you must adjust your trip length accordingly.
  4. Buffer for weather. Add one 'cushion day' to your itinerary. High winds (up to 100km/h) frequently close mountain passes like the John Gardner Pass, and you may need an extra day to wait for conditions to clear.
Can I do the W-Trek in 3 days?
Technically yes, if you use private shuttles and catamarans to skip sections, but it is exhausting and misses the best viewpoints. Stick to 5 days.
Do I need a guide?
No. The trails are extremely well-marked and maintained. You only need a guide if you prefer an all-inclusive tour.
Is the weather really that bad?
Yes. You can experience four seasons in one hour. Pack layers and ensure your rain gear is high-quality.
