How to plan your first 2 weeks in Thailand

Start in Bangkok for 3-4 days to adjust and see temples, then head to northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) for 4-5 days, and finish with 5-6 days on southern islands like Koh Phi Phi or Koh Samui. Book flights into Bangkok and arrange internal transport as you go.

  1. Get your Bangkok base sorted first. Fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Book your first 3-4 nights accommodation in advance - try Khao San Road area for backpackers or Silom for mid-range. Don't book your entire trip yet. Thailand is easy to book as you go.
  2. Plan your three regions. Divide 14 days into: Bangkok (3-4 days), Northern Thailand focused on Chiang Mai (4-5 days), and Southern beaches (5-6 days). This gives you culture, mountains, and beaches without rushing.
  3. Book internal transport day by day. Bangkok to Chiang Mai: overnight train (12 hours, 600-1500 baht) or flight (1 hour, 2000-4000 baht). Chiang Mai to islands: fly to Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Samui (1-2 hours, 3000-6000 baht). Book trains at station, flights online.
  4. Pick your southern destination wisely. Koh Phi Phi for parties and stunning views (fly to Phuket, then speedboat). Koh Samui for families and comfort (direct flights from Chiang Mai). Krabi for rock climbing and quieter beaches. Phuket for everything but crowds.
  5. Plan around weather and crowds. November to March is peak season - book accommodation 2-3 days ahead. April-May is hot season - manageable but bring sunscreen. June-October is monsoon - affects southern beaches more than north.
Should I book accommodation in advance?
Book your first 3-4 nights in Bangkok in advance. After that, Thailand is easy to book 1-2 days ahead except during peak season (December-January) when you should book 3-4 days ahead.
Is it safe to rent a scooter with no experience?
No. Thai roads are chaotic and medical facilities outside cities are limited. If you want to try, practice in a parking lot first and stick to quiet back roads. Consider bicycle or organized transport instead.
How much cash should I carry?
Carry 5000-10000 baht cash at all times. Many places don't take cards, especially street food, local transport, and small guesthouses. ATMs are everywhere but charge 220 baht fees for foreign cards.
Which islands should first-timers choose?
Koh Samui for easy access and good infrastructure. Koh Phi Phi for stunning scenery and nightlife but crowds. Avoid Koh Tao unless you're specifically diving - it's very small with limited activities.
